Beyond the Nine Dots: CAN YOU BELIEVE IT?

Can you believe it? Here we are at the end of 1998, only about 400 more daystill 2000. Can you believe it? The year has flown by, and the KIV networkcontinues to flourish bringing many more people in touch with their personalpower. More youth, parents and professional caregivers deliver KIV than everbefore in more types of circumstances than we could have "believed" ten yearsago.

Can you believe it? Throughout the year, you have continued making atremendous difference in people’s lives. As the year winds down, oftennewspapers will recount the important events of the year. Can you believethat you could do your own review? Is it time to "Catch" yourself for all theclients, students, families and colleagues that you have empowered this year? Can you believe how many lives have been touched by those you have empowered? Can you believe how far your influence ripples out? Can you believe that allof your work was done one choice at a time, one intervention at a time? TheKeys to Excellence staff, Phyllis, Ron, Wayde, Ed and Shelley extend agrateful appreciation for each time you chose to use your power to be involvedwith KIV in some way.

Can you believe it? In this time of celebration, some of us forget howpowerful we are in our own lives. Can you believe that some of us fall intothe thinking trap of empowering bills, repairs, last minute shopping andfamily issues, forgetting to empower ourselves? It may be important toremember that today is the day you make the biggest difference to yourself, your family and your holiday celebration. Truly, today is the only day inwhich you can make a difference, one choice at a time.

Can you believe it? Perhaps you can take your power back from worrying abouttomorrow or from fretting about the past. Today! This moment is alive withpossibilities. What choices are you going to make NOW! The old saying was, "If you can see it, you can believe it" In 1998, we all know that’s nottrue. We have been empowered with the internal process, "If you can believeit, you can see (experience) it."

So what are you choosing to believe and see and experience in these preciousdays ahead? We invite you to let go of grudges and stressful expectations ofyourself and others. Can you believe in the possibility of aspiring to liveeach day in joy, peace and love with your colleagues, your clients and yourfamilies? Can you believe that despite circumstances, this could be a seasonof personal celebration and renewal? This is your moment. Can you believeit?

We will be aspiring toward the same picture. We want to once again thank eachof you who have held us in your prayers and positive thoughts throughout theyear. We believe that you have made the difference in our healing process. We wish each of you a holiday season blessed with love and peace.

Around the Rocks - Client Stories

We love to hear from our clients. Recently we received three letters fromyoung women that touched our hearts. The first was sent to us from the NavajoCounty Juvenile Detention Center in Holbrook AZ, AML writes: "I have been indetention for about 5 months. When I first got here, I had such a bad attitudeabout everything. I had very bad self talk and used to say to myself I can’twait until I get out of here cuz I miss partying. Ever since Sandy McDanielstarted your Keys system, I have noticed a big change in myself. Now all Isay to myself is I want to go home and start over, and if I believe insomething, that means I can do it. The T-Chart really has helped me out alot. I use it once in awhile, but I do use self talk every day and everynight . Thank you for teaching me to care about everything I need to careabout." Keys Inc. congratulates Sandy McDaniel for being such a dynamicFacilitator of Keys to Innervisions. From the West Virginia Industrial Home for Youth, BW writes: "I look at thingsdifferently now. KIV makes me think before I make decisions. I am alwaysmaking T-Charts. I love this program. It has helped me come a long way. Ican’t seem to get enough of it." Also enclosed was a copy of this students’sPAED decision making process and her T-Chart about the goal of getting alongwith others. Thank you Master Facilitators, Vince Phelps and Angela Grisso, for forwarding this letter. From Emanuel YDC Swainsboro, GA, TT writes: "Through participation in KIV, Ihave learned that I cannot control yesterday, but I can control how I handletomorrow. I am somebody smart, special and I can do anything that I set mymind to. I am proud of the decisions I am making now." Keep up the great workFacilitator, Stefanie Morris!

Creating a Community or Consortium NewsletterBob and Betty Hare, Mohave County, AZ, have gotten their creative juicesflowing again. The Hares were an intricate part of starting the Weekend Wake-Up Workshops for juvenile probation and intensively supervised youth. Theyalso began a Possibility Parenting series for the families of these students.By training new Facilitators, Bob and Betty have enabled themselves to move onto supervision and other creative projects. Keys Inc. is consideringdesignating a special page of our Web Site for national newsletters. If youhave a KIV newsletter, forward it to our office. If not, this would be awonderful educational and creative process for staff and students. Get yourbrains and pens flying and send us your newsletters.

Application: A New Worksheet for PAEDVince Phelps, Master Facilitator from West Virginia Industrial School, hascombined the PAED and the RON processes to assist students in problem solving. When a student encounters a new problem or issue, the following outline iscompleted. The goal is to assist students with transferring learning from oneevent to another. For example: First Step Think of a time when you have stopped yourself from doingsomething wrong.(Identifying the new and old ROCK) Perception: Describe what happened, what could have resulted in a problem foryou? What did you see, hear or feel? Someone bothering me, and I want tohurt her.Association: What does this remind you of from the past? When I acted thesame way in phase I.(Identifying the OPTION that worked in the past)Evaluation: What else is possible? What did you tell yourself that kept youout of trouble? To calm down, I am a bigger person and not to give my powerto others.(Identifying the NEXT TIME)Decision: What did you decide to do to prevent the problem? I kept as muchdistance as possible; only talked to her when she asked me questions. Ihandled the situation like an adult.Vince has also added the Formula Affirmation outline to the bottom of the T-Chart worksheet. In this way, a student can easily write an affirmation fromthe content of herT-chart, if she decides to move toward the goal.

Enroll"Empowered Supervision" Workshops

In September, Ron Kuhn and Phyllis Antonelli hit the road once again todeliver an exciting training program. Using the foundations of KIV, thePowerTools and Power Phrases, a specific model was designed for supervisors toempower themselves and the people they manage. Topics included, "ProlongedStress is Optional," "Discipline and Feedback Which Creates Behaviors YouWant," "Your Gatekeeper is Your Best Friend," "Performance Goals - Establisha Vision". Carla Kolling, Director of Human Resources for the Supreme Courtof North Dakota, brought together a group of Supervisors from their courtsystem. The two day seminar resulted in many positive comments about thevalue of tools which they could readily use on themselves and others. Wetraveled on to the state of New Jersey, where Chris Laquidara, MasterFacilitator, New Jersey Dept. of Adult Corrections, coordinated a SupervisoryWorkshop for administrators throughout their adult facilities. Once again,in addition to having fun, they were able to see the application forthemselves, their staff and for the inmates within the system. If you areinterested in a Supervisory Workshop for yourself or your staff, please callour office.
